How to Calculate Deck Stain

Measure your deck floor area (length ร— width) and add the railing surface area. For railings, estimate 3 square feet per linear foot to account for balusters, top rail, and posts. One gallon of deck stain covers approximately 150โ€“250 square feet depending on wood porosity and stain type. Semi-transparent stains cover more area than solid stains.

When to Restain Your Deck

Most decks need restaining every 2โ€“3 years. To test, sprinkle water on the deck โ€” if it beads up, the stain is still effective. If it soaks in, it's time to restain. The best time to stain is during mild weather (50โ€“80ยฐF) with no rain forecast for 24โ€“48 hours.

Oil-Based vs Water-Based Stain

๐Ÿ›ข๏ธ Oil-Based

  • โœ“ Penetrates deeper into wood
  • โœ“ Lasts 3โ€“5 years
  • โœ“ Rich, natural look
  • โœ— 24โ€“48 hour dry time
  • โœ— Mineral spirits cleanup
  • โœ— Stronger fumes

๐Ÿ’ง Water-Based

  • โœ“ Dries in 2โ€“4 hours
  • โœ“ Soap and water cleanup
  • โœ“ Low odor, lower VOC
  • โœ— Lasts 2โ€“3 years
  • โœ— May raise wood grain
  • โœ— Less natural appearance

Signs Your Deck Needs Restaining
