How to Calculate Pavers
First, calculate your patio or walkway area in square feet (length × width). Then divide by the area of a single paver (in square feet). Add 10% for waste on rectangular layouts, or 15% if your design has curves, angles, or decorative patterns that require more cuts. Don't forget to account for the sand base — you'll need about 1 inch of leveling sand beneath the pavers.
Popular Paver Sizes
Common paver sizes include 6×6, 6×9, 8×8, 12×12, and 16×16 inches. Larger pavers cover more area with fewer pieces but can be harder to level and more prone to cracking. Smaller pavers offer more pattern flexibility. The 6×9 and 8×12 sizes are most popular for residential patios because they balance coverage with versatility.
