How to Calculate Pavers

First, calculate your patio or walkway area in square feet (length × width). Then divide by the area of a single paver (in square feet). Add 10% for waste on rectangular layouts, or 15% if your design has curves, angles, or decorative patterns that require more cuts. Don't forget to account for the sand base — you'll need about 1 inch of leveling sand beneath the pavers.

Popular Paver Sizes

Common paver sizes include 6×6, 6×9, 8×8, 12×12, and 16×16 inches. Larger pavers cover more area with fewer pieces but can be harder to level and more prone to cracking. Smaller pavers offer more pattern flexibility. The 6×9 and 8×12 sizes are most popular for residential patios because they balance coverage with versatility.

Base Preparation Steps

1

Excavate

Dig 6–8 inches deep (8–12 inches for driveways). Slope away from structures for drainage at 1/8 inch per foot.

2

Compact Subgrade

Use a plate compactor on the exposed soil. The base is only as strong as the ground beneath it.

3

Install Gravel Base

Add 4–6 inches of crushed stone in 2-inch lifts, compacting each layer. Use #2 or #57 crushed stone.

4

Add Leveling Sand

Spread 1 inch of coarse bedding sand. Screed it flat using pipe rails as guides.

5

Lay Pavers

Start from a corner, working outward. Use spacers for consistent joint width. Cut edge pieces with a wet saw.

6

Fill Joints & Compact

Sweep polymeric sand into joints. Run the plate compactor over pavers with a rubber pad to set everything.
