Why Tank Volume Matters
Knowing your precise tank volume is essential for every aspect of fishkeeping. Dosing medications, water conditioners, fertilizers, and CO2 injections are all calculated per gallon or per liter. An incorrect volume estimate means under-dosing (ineffective treatment) or overdosing (potentially harming fish). Always measure the actual tank interior dimensions for accuracy.
Actual vs. Labeled Volume
The volume label on a tank (e.g., "55 gallon standard") refers to the tank's maximum capacity based on outer dimensions. The actual usable water volume is always less due to glass thickness, gravel substrate (3-4 inches displaces significant water), decorations, and the fact that tanks are never filled 100% to the brim. Typically, actual water volume is 10-20% less than the labeled capacity.
